Mission
The mission of the Rockport Garden Club of Maine is to cultivate the art of gardening together with the beautification of the community and to sponsor scholarships for those pursuing education in fields related to horticulture or the environment.
History
The original garden club in Rockport started in 1934 as an extension of the Camden Garden Club. The initial membership was 18 women committed to enhancing the community through beautification and goodwill. They cleared brush and destroyed gypsy moth eggs, initiated landscaping projects in the spirit of Beatrix Ferrand, the renowned landscape architect, delivered "sunshine baskets" to elders, and hosted the club's first home garden tour. In 1941, the group refocused its efforts in support of the Red Cross and national war efforts.
The Rockport Garden Club was officially founded in 1959 with a new membership of 30 women, again committed to enhancing the beauty of Rockport, Maine. Members enjoyed fellowship and friendship at club meetings and garden teas.
The 1970s saw an expansion of the club's vision and interests, adding to its portfolio a garden encircling the André the Seal sculpture at Marine Park and decorating the village every December with holiday wreaths. The Club also raised and donated $11,700 to save the Rockport Opera House and created its "Quilt of Rockport Scenes," once housed at the 1770s Homestead (formerly the Conway House).
The Rockport Garden Club has continued to expand its activities over the decades. The club now has more than 80 members who gather regularly for gardening projects and programs, and socializing and fun! Its two primary initiatives - Rockport Gardens and Youth Scholarships - remain the focus of the club's energy and fundraising.
